}The Arts Desk, February 2019"In a performance which could rival some of Europe’s major orchestras, the SOI wove a vivid tapestry evocative of Scheherazade’s tales with soaring woodwind, punching brass and warm strings… This is clearly an orchestra that’s going places"

The Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) is India’s first and only professional orchestra. Founded in 2006 and resident at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai, the orchestra is led by Music Director Marat Bisengaliev and Associate Music Director Zane Dalal.
The orchestra has worked with artists from all over the world including conductors such as Martyn Brabbins, Augustin Dumay, Rafael Payare and Carlo Rizzi, and soloists including Angel Blue, Barry Douglas, Alina Ibragimova, Maria João Pires and Cédric Tiberghien.
The SOI is increasingly touring outside of India and made a successful UK debut tour in February 2019. The orchestra returns to the UK on 29 November-9 December 2023 for nine concerts conducted by Zane Dalal, Alpesh Chauhan and Richard Farnes, featuring soloists Pavel Kolesnikov, Marat Bisengaliev, and Zakir Hussain, Rakesh Chauraisa and Niladri Kumar, who will perform the European premiere of the tabla virtuoso's Triple Concerto, which the orchestra commissioned.
Zakir Hussain discusses his new Triple Concerto. The Symphony Orchestra of India commissioned the piece for its 2023 Autumn season and will perform it as part of its UK tour in November-December 2023.
