Sakari Oramo began his tenure as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the First Night of the Proms in July 2013, and in 2014 led the orchestra in his debut at the Last Night of the Proms. Oramo is equally recognized for his work as Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, a position he has held since 2008.
He is also Principal Conductor of the West Coast Kokkola Opera and the Ostrobothian Chamber Orchestra and, after a decade as Chief Conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, now serves as their Honorary Conductor, a title he has held since 2012. In 2016, Oramo won the Philharmonic Society’s ‘Conductor of the Year’ award and BBC Music Magazine’s ‘Orchestral Recording of the year’ for his CD of Nielsen’s Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3 with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
Oramo opens his 2019/20 season with the BBC Symphony Orchestra with a concert performance of Alwyn’s Miss Julie on 3 October 2019.
