Stanislav Kochanovsky is recognised as one of the most refined and insightful conductors of his generation. Chief Conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover since the beginning of the 2024/25 season, he brings a distinctive interpretative voice and clear musical vision to the podium, combining musical depth and stylistic clarity with a sincere respect for orchestral collaboration.
Equally accomplished in symphonic and operatic repertoire, Kochanovsky has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also conducted over thirty operatic works, including The Queen of Spades and Eugene Onegin at Zurich Opera House, Iolanta for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and Prince Igor at Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam.
As Chief Conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie, Kochanovsky leads with a sense of purpose, believing that musical excellence, consistency, and authenticity are key to inspiring audiences and serving the orchestra’s wider mission today. During the 2026/27 season, he continues his close relationship with the NDR Radiophilharmonie through major touring, recording, and artistic projects, alongside returns to the DR Danish National Symphony, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. His season also includes significant debuts with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
A graduate of the Glinka Choir School and the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St Petersburg, Kochanovsky began his career at St Petersburg’s Mikhailovsky Theatre, where he gained remarkable experience conducting over 60 opera and ballet productions before the age of 25. He later served as Chief Conductor of the State Safonov Philharmonic from 2010-15, and has since conducted the major orchestras of his native country, including the St Petersburg Philharmonic, the Russian National Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, the Moscow Philharmonic, and the Mariinsky Orchestra. Kochanovsky is currently based in Hamburg, where is lives with his family.
