In September 2019, Gergely Madaras began his tenure as Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège. He is also Music Director of the Orchestre Dijon Bourgogne, and Chief Conductor of the Savaria Symphony Orchestra in his native Hungary.
While grounded in the traditional classic and romantic repertoire, Madaras is an advocate of Bartók, Kodály and Dohnányi and also maintains a close relationship with new music, having conducted more than 100 works written after 1970, and closely collaborated with composers Pierre Boulez, George Benjamin and Peter Eötvös. Equally establishing a distinguished operatic repertoire, he has appeared at the English National Opera, Dutch National Opera, Hungarian State Opera and Grand Théâtre de Genève.
Madaras’ 2019/20 season includes debuts with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Geneva Chamber Orchestra, as well as returning to the Hallé, BBC Scottish Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestra.
