Sakari Oramo

Sakari Oramo began his tenure as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the First Night of the Proms in July 2013, and in 2014 led the orchestra in his debut at the Last Night of the Proms. Oramo is equally recognized for his work as Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, a position he has held since 2008.

He is also Principal Conductor of the West Coast Kokkola Opera and the Ostrobothian Chamber Orchestra and, after a decade as Chief Conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, now serves as their Honorary Conductor, a title he has held since 2012. In 2016, Oramo won the Philharmonic Society’s ‘Conductor of the Year’ award and BBC Music Magazine’s ‘Orchestral Recording of the year’ for his CD of Nielsen’s Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3 with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

Oramo’s 2018/19 season features a diverse series of engagements. Highlights of his BBC Symphony Orchestra season include Brahms’s Symphony No.3, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 and Mahler’s Symphony No.7 as well as a BBC Total Immersion concert on Ligeti and a tour to Spain. Oramo will also return to the Berlin Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
