Pekka Kuusisto

Recipient of the 2013 Nordic Council Music Prize, the ever-exhilarating Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto has been described by critics as a performer ‘who surely has the most personal sound of any classical violinist now alive’ (The Daily Telegraph). He is Artistic Director of the ACO Collective and Our Festival in Finland, Artistic Best Friend of the Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Artistic Partner with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

In September 2018, Kuusisto will take up the position of Artist-in-Residence at Wigmore Hall with recitals inspired by cellular biology, human fertility and neuroscience. He opens this residency on 13 September with a new work by Perttu Haapanen, a solo meditation on the process of mutation and variation found in human cancer cells.

The multi-faceted nature of Kuusisto’s career is evident in his involvement, together with Samuli Kosminen, in writing the music for Tove Jansson’s ‘Moomin stories’, the most well-known and biggest animation series ever made based on Finnish literature. His excitement about this project is clear, saying “interest in the Moomins has only grown worldwide since the centenary of Jansson’s birth in 2014, which is why it is so exciting to be involved with this television project.”
