Since giving its first concert in 1950, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra has continued to expand from part-time ensemble of 40 players to an internationally renowned orchestra of 85 full-time members. Resident at Harpa concert hall in Reykavík, it is an internationally renowned orchestra which regularly appears throughout Europe, having given performances at the BBC Proms and Wiener Musikverein, and in 2018 embarked on a highly successful three-week tour of Japan with Vladimir Ashkenazy.

In 2020 the orchestra will celebrate their 70th anniversary with an eight-date UK tour led by Chief Conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier and joined by international pianists Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Yeol Eum Son. They will showcase the music of Composer in Residence Anna Thorvaldsdottir alongside Bizet, Ravel, Sibelius and Prokofiev.
