Harpa, Reykjavík’s Concert Hall and Conference Centre, designed by renowned artist Olafur Eliasson, opened in May 2011. The striking addition to Reykjavík’s skyline celebrated its official inauguration on Saturday 20 August with a showcase of artistic excellence including performances by the Icelandinc Symphony Orchestra, the world premiere of two pieces for seven harps by composers Mist Þorkelsdóttir and Atli Heimir Sveinsson, and a display by Chinese acrobats.

The Icelandic Opera, Harpa’s resident opera company, presented its first production in the new hall on 22 October with Mozart’s The Magic Flute. On 16 March it will present its second production La Boheme.
